SCC Scotland send off Stewart Stevenson MSP to the Rio summit

The long-awaited Rio+20 Summit has now taken place, and a negotiating text has been agreed. The outcome of the summit has been met with almost universal disappointment, this makes it more important than ever that we keep the pressure up on our local politicians.

See how people around the UK have been lobbying locally during the Rio Connection.

Here's an early closing statement on the Rio+20 Summit from WWF

Scottish Government must champion climate justice at Rio+20

Thursday 14th June 2012
Minister for Environment & Climate Change to Rio conference
Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) has called on the Scottish Government to lead by example at Rio+20 - the UN conference on sustainable development in Brazil next week.

On the eve of Climate Change Minister Stewart Stevenson’s departure for the conference, SCCS has urged him to use Scotland’s progressive stance on environmental issues to influence the global talks.

The call came as Mr Stevenson addressed the SCCS AGM in Edinburgh.

The coalition, which includes more than 60 organisations, believes Scotland has the opportunity to act as a global champion for action on climate change.

Scottish Climate Justice Fund shows the way forward

Thursday 31st May 2012

The announcement today of the Scottish Government's Climate Justice Fund was welcomed by the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition.

The new fund to help people living in some of the world's poorest countries affected by the changing climate, such as more frequent and severe droughts and floods, will be a good example to bring to the Rio+20 summit in June of how the rich world can can face up to its historic responsibility for climate change and its substantial negative impact on many of the world’s poorest people.

Rio Connection

Stop Climate Chaos Cymru is gearing up for The Rio Connection, a week of action across the UK, in the run up to the summit. Between 16-22 June, grassroots networks will be holding Rio-themed events with their elected representatives to connect local, national and global sustainability issues, inspire new people to talk about sustainability and encourage MPs, Welsh Assembly Members and MSPs to sign up to a sustainable future.

Additional lobby issues for the Rio Connection

If you want to talk to your MP, Welsh Assembly Member or MSP about only the Rio declaration, that's great! Getting them to show their support for a green economy and sustainable future will be invaluable.

But if you want to lobby in more detail, below are some briefings on a few other areas in which we hope to see progress:

  • A stronger EU 2020 emissions target: We need the EU to commit to at least a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020.
